Here are a few pics from my shop. We moved out to 5 1/2 acres in 2006 from a crowded subdivision so
we could build a shop where I could work on my automobile projects (and we built a house, too).
We enjoy a view of the woods and a major river from our deck. I constructed a 40' x 60'
Hansen pole barn just behind the house. We took all the dirt from the basement to level the site for the
shop.
I did the plumbing for the bathroom, sink and heated floor. The water for the radiant floor is pumped
into the shop from a high efficiency boiler in the house (which also heats the house). I insulated
the floor with reflective radiant floor insulation and insulated the walls and ceilings with six inches of
insulation. The 10' overhead doors are also insulated and on an automatic door opener. The walls
and ceilings are covered with 5/8" sheetrock. A local teenager and I rented a sprayer and painted
the entire interior in two days. The 5" cement floor is sealed with protective
sealant. Furnishings for the shop include a portable four-post auto lift, 10' A-frame with electric
hoist and an 80 gallon air compressor on 220 amp service. The shop is about as energy efficient as I
could make it. At a constant 55 degrees during the winter, it makes a great place to work on a cold winter
night after the kids go to bed.
